Meet Antwon Person, The Entrepreneur Known as The Skillful Advisor

Jun 6, 2026

Antwon Person is an American entrepreneur, investor, business coach, and retired United States Army officer. He is the founder of Skillful Brands, a business growth consultancy that works with entrepreneurs and small business owners across the United States. With more than two decades of military leadership experience behind him and a growing presence in the entrepreneurship and business coaching space, Person has earned recognition under a professional identity that speaks directly to his approach — The Skillful Advisor.

His story does not follow the conventional path into entrepreneurship. Person spent over twenty years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army before retiring from active duty in 2024 and stepping into the private sector. The transition was not accidental. It was purposeful, methodical, and informed by everything he had learned about leading organizations, building systems, and developing people capable of executing without constant supervision. That same intentionality now defines how he works with every entrepreneur and business owner who comes through Skillful Brands.

Person was born on January 24, 1980, and grew up in Boykins, Virginia. He attended Southampton High School before going on to study at Virginia State University, a historically Black university with a long tradition of producing graduates who go on to careers in public service, business, and the military. His formal education did not stop there. Over the course of his military career, Person pursued advanced graduate studies and professional military education at the Florida Institute of Technology, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Florida State University. That combination of academic training and elite military education gave him a depth of understanding in organizational leadership and strategic management that few business coaches can genuinely claim.

His military career was defined by progressive responsibility and a consistent record of leading complex organizations under demanding conditions. Person commanded at the company and battalion levels within the Department of Defense, overseeing the readiness, welfare, and performance of thousands of military personnel while simultaneously managing large-scale operational and logistical programs. The environments he operated in required everything he now teaches — clear systems, defined accountability, disciplined delegation, and the ability to make sound decisions when the stakes are high and the pressure is real.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, while stationed in South Korea, Person faced one of the most difficult tests of his career. His unit was responsible for maintaining full military readiness at a time when global supply chains were collapsing and the health of service members was under constant threat. His strategic planning and expertise as a senior logistics and supply chain leader were central to keeping his organization operational and his personnel protected throughout the crisis. He later wrote about that experience in an article titled "Korean Pandemic Epicenter, Sustaining, Protecting the Force Amid COVID-19," which was published in Army Sustainment magazine, a professional journal of the United States Army. The article gave a detailed account of the leadership decisions and operational strategies his unit employed and stands as a documented record of his competence under genuine pressure.

When Person retired from the Army in 2024, he brought all of that experience into Skillful Brands with a clear and focused purpose. The firm is built around a problem he had watched derail countless organizations throughout his career — the problem of a single person becoming so central to the functioning of an organization that the organization cannot grow or even operate effectively in their absence. For military units, that kind of dependency is a vulnerability. For businesses, it is a ceiling. Skillful Brands exists to help entrepreneurs identify and dismantle that ceiling by putting in place the systems, structures, and leadership frameworks that allow a company to scale beyond its founder.

Person's core business philosophy is built around a principle he describes as letting go to scale faster. The idea is straightforward but requires genuine discipline to execute. A founder who wants their business to grow must make a deliberate decision to design that business so it no longer depends on their constant presence to move forward. That means building clear organizational structures, creating delegation frameworks that empower team members to take ownership of outcomes, and shifting from a doing mindset to a leading mindset. Person helps clients work through every dimension of that shift, and he does it using the same frameworks that allowed him to lead thousands of people effectively across multiple high-stakes assignments in uniform.

What makes Person different in a coaching market crowded with voices offering advice they have never had to live by is the weight of his actual experience. His methods are not derived from reading about leadership or observing other organizations from the outside. They come from years of direct command responsibility in environments where vague systems, unclear communication, and poor delegation produced real and serious consequences. That background is what gives his work its credibility and what makes the positioning of The Skillful Advisor something more substantive than a personal brand. It is an accurate description of the standard he holds himself and his clients to.

Person has shared his perspectives on entrepreneurship and leadership across several media platforms and podcast programs. He appeared on the A Coffee with Karen podcast in an episode focused on applying military leadership principles to business growth. He was featured on the Develpreneur platform in a conversation about the mindset and structural transition required when moving from freelance or side-project work to running a real company. He joined The Tron Podcast to reflect on his military career and its influence on his entrepreneurial approach. And in a YouTube interview focused on delegation and founder dependency, he walked through the leadership and structural changes that scaling a business actually requires.

Beyond his professional work, Person is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., one of the most historically significant African American fraternities in the United States, and he serves on the Board of Directors of Tulsa Initiative, Inc., contributing strategic leadership and governance in a civic capacity.

Antwon Person is not the kind of business coach who built a following by talking about success. He is someone who spent over two decades leading real organizations in genuinely demanding environments and who now brings the hard-won clarity of that experience to entrepreneurs who are serious about building companies that are structured to last. Through Skillful Brands and the work he does as The Skillful Advisor, Person offers founders something that is increasingly rare in the modern coaching landscape — guidance that is earned, practical, and built entirely around outcomes.
