A 17-year-old social media influencer, Sana Yousaf, was tragically shot dead at her home in Islamabad earlier this week. Police have arrested a suspect from Faisalabad in connection with the murder, which authorities believe was driven by repeated romantic rejections.
According to initial investigations, the suspect had been allegedly stalking Sana for several months, both online and offline. Police sources confirmed that the man traveled from Faisalabad to Islamabad with the intention of confronting her, after she reportedly refused multiple advances and attempts at contact.
Sana Yousaf, known for her popular TikTok and Instagram content under the handle @sanayousaf22, had over 500,000 followers and was considered a rising star in Pakistan's social media landscape. She was known for her fashion, lifestyle, and daily routine videos that resonated with youth across the country.
On the day of the incident, Sana was at home when the suspect allegedly entered her residence and fatally shot her. Emergency services were called, but she succumbed to her injuries before she could be taken to the hospital.
The case has drawn significant public and media attention, with widespread outrage over the security and safety of women in the digital space. Thousands of fans and fellow influencers have taken to social media to pay tribute to Sana, using hashtags like #JusticeForSana and #RIPSanaYousaf.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad confirmed the arrest in a press briefing late Tuesday evening. “We have apprehended a man from Faisalabad who has confessed to the crime. The motive appears to be linked to emotional obsession and rejection,” the IGP stated.
Cybercrime and women’s rights activists are now calling for stronger protections for female content creators and influencers, who often face harassment and stalking both online and in real life. “Sana’s death is a painful reminder of the dangers young women face every day, simply for being visible and successful online,” said a spokesperson for the Digital Rights Foundation.
Funeral prayers for Sana Yousaf were held in Islamabad on Wednesday, attended by family, friends, and fans. She is survived by her parents and two younger siblings.
An investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information online as the case develops.
